Comprehension text: Murder in Granada

von Eric Fendley

Once upon a time, in the beautiful city of Granada, Spain, there lived a little boy named Miguel. He loved to explore the city and was always fascinated by the famous Alhambra Palace. One day, Miguel's parents took him to the Alhambra, and he was overjoyed.

As he was wandering around, Miguel noticed something strange. He saw a man with a knife, and another man lying on the ground, covered in blood. Miguel was terrified and tried to run away, but the man with the knife saw him and started to chase him.

Miguel ran as fast as he could, but the man was catching up to him. Eventually, he managed to hide behind a large statue. He could hear the man's footsteps getting closer and closer, but he remained hidden until he was sure the man was gone.

Miguel was so shaken up by what he had seen that he didn't know what to do. He wanted to tell someone, but he was too scared. He knew he had to be brave, though, and eventually he went to the Prince and told him what he had seen.

To Miguel's surprise, the Prince was grateful for his information. He told Miguel that the man who had been murdered was his own brother and that the man with the knife was the assassin. With the information that Miguel had given him, the Prince was able to have the assassin arrested.

The Prince was so impressed with Miguel's bravery that he decided to reward him. He made Miguel into a Sultan, which was a very important and powerful position. Miguel was thrilled and couldn't believe what had happened. He had gone from being a scared little boy to a powerful Sultan, all because of his bravery.

From that day on, Miguel was known as Sultan Miguel, and he was greatly respected in Granada. He always remembered the day he witnessed a murder at the Alhambra Palace, but he was proud that he had been able to help catch the killer and earn his reward.

Explanation: Past continuous tense

The sentence "As he was wandering around, Miguel noticed something strange" uses both the past simple tense and the past continuous tense.

The past continuous tense, "was wandering," is used to describe an action that was ongoing in the past, while another action interrupted it. In this sentence, the ongoing action was Miguel wandering around the Alhambra Palace when he noticed something strange, which interrupted his wandering.

The past simple tense, "noticed," is used to describe a completed action in the past. In this sentence, it describes the action that interrupted Miguel's wandering, which was him noticing something strange.

Together, the past continuous and past simple tenses show us that Miguel was doing something when something else happened. He was wandering around, and while he was in the process of doing so, he noticed something strange. The past continuous tense provides the context of what Miguel was doing at the time, and the past simple tense describes the specific action that occurred to interrupt it.
